The film is considered a classic and is still viewed as one of the best anime films ever made. The story takes place in Tokyo in 2019. It has been thirty years since the city was destroyed by a secret weapons project, and now it is a dark and dangerous place populated by gangs and terrorists. Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda are thrown into neo-Tokyo's darkest secret when their motorcycle gang gets dragged into a military operation. Tetsuo is captured and subjected to a series of experiments that give him paranormal powers. But his powers get out of control and he runs amok. Nothing seems to be able to stop the destructive forces, except Akira.
