In this drama by director Wim Wenders we see that it is a coincidence that the marine biologist Danielle (Alicia Vikander) and the spy James (James McAvoy) meet each other. Their story begins as a flirt at a hotel on the French coast, but quickly develops into a passionate love affair. When they are separated after a short while, James goes on a secret mission. He is quickly captured and begin to realize that he may not survive his mission. Danielle is on her way thousands of meters below the water surface to start a huge project. They are both dreaming back to the French coast. The film is based on the novel Submergence by J.M. Ledgard
