Charlatan is based on the true story of the Czech herbalist Jan Mikolášek who healed millions of people in the early 20th century. With the help of his intuition and good knowledge of herbs and plants, Mikolášek helped both poor and politically influential people. As Mikolášek became more successful and noted for his abilities, both the Nazi and Communist regimes began to take an interest in the unconventional healer and he was subjected to great trials.
